Weddell Sea & Paulet Island

Day 4 was bright and sunny, and the original plan was to go across the Weddell sea. The plan got sullied when the crew was confronted with multi-year ice, which made it impossible to break through. The glacial structures on the Weddell sea were magnificent and great to watch.

Later in the afternoon, we landed on Paulet Island, which has a huge colony of Adélie penguins. We had lovely sightings of parents feeding their chicks. A big fight broke out amongst some of the penguins, which was interesting to watch.

We sailed north in the evening to navigate on to the west side of the Antarctic peninsula. In the evening we saw a large pod of Orcas (killer whales) hunting penguins. It was an awesome sighting, with the penguins making a run in the Weddell sea.
